ALASKA CHIPS, FROM FARM TO FACTORY
Track the life cycle of an ordinary potato chip
01
Meet our Farmers
For the majority of the year the Alaska Chip Company receives fresh potatoes from Vanderwheele farms located in the fertile valley of Palmer, Alaska. Did you know that the species of potato used will have a huge impact on the quality of a potato chip?
Between the sugar content of the potato, and the ratio of potato solids to water, selecting the right variety is important for achieving a hearty and delicious snack. The unique qualities of Alaskan potatoes have given our chips there signature rich flavor and full texture.
While the Alaskan growing season is shorter, the summer days for growing are much longer due to the presence of the midnight sun shining over the fields for up to 22 hours in a day!
02
Slicing and Frying Potatoes
Once the potatoes are cleaned, pealed, and sliced, our chips then start the cooking process. Did you know a 25lb batch of potatoes can lose up to 12lbs of their water content through steam?
03
Eco-Friendly Oil Filtration
Using fresh and clean oil is crucial for achieving a high-quality flavor in our potato chips. Instead of discarding used oil, we utilize an advanced method to purify cooking oil. The key to a good quality oil lies in eliminating free fatty acids.
04
Seasoning and Sorting
Using our special assortments of seasoning blends, the chips are coated and mixed with an even layer of flavor. Next, our staff sort out any chips which don't fit our standard so that only the best chips make it in the bag.
05
Packaging
By far our largest machine, our bagger is not only interesting to watch the process for but is also very efficient at sealing our snacks up so our chips remain fresh.
06
The Perfect Chip
At this stage of the process, we bid farewell to our freshly made potato chips who are sent off to the most important part of their journey: the journey to your table!
